Welcome to Hong Kong!

Hong Kong has the second largest amount of skyscrapers in the world, so you might just see one, maybe two. In fact, you’ll probably become entangled within this sleepless skyscraper territory, which is an incredible experience in itself. With markets full of delicious local recipes and great bargains,  you and your travel money will have a ball.

ATM access

5/5 stars – ATMs have sprouted up all over Hong Kong and should be available at any hour. Just be wary of any withdrawal fees you may be paying in more touristy areas.

It’s excellent, with free access to hundreds of  Wi-Fi hotspots.

Travel Money Trivia

The last minted 1c coins never reached the shores as they were sunk  during WWII.

Beautiful or bland?
The Bauhinia flower was chosen to appear on the currency for looking politically neutral

Honkie-tonk notes

Let's talk money

Most places will readily accept cards. Which is good, because cash can get pretty confusing with some of the same value banknotes varying in looks. However, carrying cash is a must for the endless markets and cheap street food stalls scattered all over the streets. Hong Kong? More like Hong Ka-ching!

  • Haggling is expected at markets
  • You won’t be able to use your HKD in China
  • Exchanging money at airports and hotels costs more
  • Taxi drivers aren’t required to make change from notes
  • Get the most out of your ferry ride during nonpeak times
  • The Airport Express train is cheap and quick
  • Most signs are in English
  • The view from The Peak can be seen for free on top of The Peak Galleria Mall
