About the currency

Coins and notes

The Vietnamese dong (₫) has been the currency of Vietnam since 1978. The dong was once subdivided into 10 hào, which were then further subdivided into 10 xu. Neither are used today.

The use of coins has dropped greatly, and while coins in variations of 200₫, 500₫, 1,000₫, 2,000₫, and 5,000₫ are still legal tender, they’re rarely used or accepted in retail and banks, so it’s best to stick to notes.

Commonly used banknotes include 10,000₫, 20,000₫, 50,000₫, 100,000₫, 200,000₫ and 500,000₫, while rarely used notes include 100₫, 200₫, 500₫, 1,000₫, 2,000₫ and 5,000₫.

Facts about the currency

  • If you’re arriving or departing from Vietnam with more that VND 15,000,000, or any foreign currency exceeding USD 5,000 (or equivalent), it needs to be declared.
  • Commemorative coins have been issued in copper, brass, copper-nickel, silver and gold since 1986, but have never been used in circulation.
